Background of the Study

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most common and preventable complications of surgery, leading to increased morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and additional healthcare costs. Infection control protocols are essential to preventing SSIs, and adherence to these protocols is critical in surgical settings (Abubakar et al., 2023). Nurses play an integral role in infection control within surgical wards, as they are responsible for implementing aseptic techniques, managing wound care, administering antibiotics, and educating patients on postoperative care (Nwachukwu et al., 2023).

At Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, infection control protocols are in place to minimize the risk of infections in surgical patients. However, adherence to these protocols can vary among nurses due to factors such as workload, training, and resource availability (Aliyu et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the extent to which nurses in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital adhere to infection control protocols and identify barriers that hinder their adherence.

Statement of the Problem

Surgical site infections are a significant concern in healthcare settings, and adherence to infection control protocols is essential to prevent their occurrence. At Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, nurses are tasked with implementing these protocols, but it is unclear to what extent they adhere to the guidelines. Inadequate adherence to infection control protocols can lead to increased rates of SSIs, negatively impacting patient recovery and increasing healthcare costs. This study will evaluate nurses' adherence to infection control protocols in the surgical wards and identify challenges in their implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of adherence to infection control protocols by nurses in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital.

  2. To identify factors that influence nurses' adherence to infection control protocols in the surgical wards.

  3. To assess the challenges nurses face in adhering to infection control protocols in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adherence to infection control protocols by nurses in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital?

  2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to infection control protocols in the surgical wards?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in adhering to infection control protocols in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher knowledge of infection control protocols are more likely to adhere to them.

  2. There is a significant relationship between the availability of resources and nurses' adherence to infection control protocols.

  3. Nurses in surgical wards face significant barriers to adhering to infection control protocols.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in the surgical wards at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital who are responsible for implementing infection control protocols. It will evaluate their level of adherence, influencing factors, and challenges encountered. A limitation of the study is that the findings may not be generalizable to other hospitals, as practices and resources may vary.

Definitions of Terms

  • Infection Control Protocols: A set of procedures designed to prevent infections in healthcare settings, including hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, and proper wound care.

  • Surgical Site Infections (SSIs): Infections that occur at the site of a surgical incision, typically within 30 days after surgery.

  • Nurses' Adherence: The extent to which nurses comply with established infection control protocols in their daily practice.
